This Friday, New Mexico in Focus kicks off its 2017 “Coverage For the People, Power, and Democracy Project” in collaboration with KUNM-FM, New Mexico in Depth and the New Mexico News Port to discuss the newly formed New Mexico Ethics Watch.

NMiF correspondent Gwyneth Doland will sit down with leaders from the New Mexico Ethics Watch to talk about their priorities and how they are helping everyday New Mexicans navigate the challenging process of tracking issues related to government ethics.

KUNM-FM and the New Mexico News Port are both located on the University of New Mexico campus, while New Mexico in Depth is an online independent news site.

Last year, many New Mexicans were shocked to learn that there were more than 5,000 untested rape kits across the state, according to a report from state auditor Time Keller’s office.

NMiF producer Sarah Gustavus talks with Keller and Jim Harvey of the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico to investigate the current status of untested rape kits and what is being done to move forward and prevent such a backlog from happening again.

This week, NMiF host Gene Grant and the Line opinion panel debate on recent news topics, including the growing line-up of candidates vying to be the next mayor of Albuquerque and whether or not parents of APS third-graders were properly notified about their children’s reading deficiencies.

The show regularly airs Fridays at 7 p.m. and repeats Sundays at 7 a.m. on Channel 5.1 and Saturdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. on Channel 9.1, except during Pledge Drives.

NMiF is New Mexico PBS’ one-hour public affairs show covering the events, issues, and people that are shaping life in New Mexico and in the Southwest.
