The University of New Mexico Division for Equity and Inclusion seeks nominations for the Sixth Annual Presidential Luminaria Awards. Nominations are accepted until Friday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m.

The Sixth Annual Luminaria Awards and Diversity Celebration, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the UNM Student Union Building Ballroom C. Tickets will be available beginning Monday, Oct. 19 at DEI.

In New Mexico, luminarias are used to “light the way.” The word luminaria means a body that gives light. It also is a person of prominence or brilliant achievement. The Luminaria Awards recognize individuals and organizations that have lit the path in areas of diversity, equity, inclusion or social justice. Their commitment can be evident in recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups; teaching, research and/or service; multicultural or cultural awareness programming; social justice organizing, community outreach or other similar activities.

Recipients of the Luminaria Awards demonstrate an exemplary commitment to addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, or social justice at the University of New Mexico or in New Mexico; emerging or long-term commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion or social justice effort goes above and beyond the routine expectations of the job or project; provide evidence to support the contribution the individual(s) or unit has made in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion or social justice.

Nominations can be made for the following award categories:

  • Faculty Award: Up to two (2) awards
  • Staff Award: Up to two (2) awards
  • Student/Student Organization Awards: Up to two (2) awards
  • Community Organization Award: One (1) award

Nominations can be submitted by colleagues, peers, supervisors or advisors (in the case of student nominees) who recognize the significance of the nominee’s work. Multiple nominators can support an individual’s nomination.

Nominations should clearly identify in detail how the nominee demonstrates exemplary commitment to addressing diversity, equity, inclusion or social justice; examples of exceeding routine expectations of job or project; and how they have advanced the cause.

Nomination forms, available here, must be completed by Friday, Oct. 16 on-line or printed and mailed with letter(s) of nomination. Signed letter(s) of support must be post-marked or delivered in person to:
