When Laura Soito came to New Mexico from the University of California Davis, she began looking in Wikipedia to see what New Mexico people and places had pages. She noticed the lack of information available about the state and is now thinking about ways to remedy that.
At UC Davis she had worked in the library with Wikipedia editors. Now as an assistant professor and subject librarian for the physical sciences in the College of University libraries and Learning Sciences at The University of New Mexico, she has an opportunity to share her enthusiasm for Wikipedia with others.
On April 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., she will host an event that will teach people how to work with Wikipedia. On May 5, the focus will be on Nature in New Mexico. She hopes to continue the Wikipedia editing meetings on the first Thursday of every month. The event will be in the classroom at Centennial Library in L253.
“People can begin working in almost any area,” she said. “There is so much that should be added.”
Anyone can create a Wikipedia page, she said, but the information must be sourced and point back to some publication or book. It isn’t a place for opinion.
Anyone who has an interest in learning more about how Wikipedia works and how to help make knowledge more widely available is welcome.
In April the focus will be on New Mexico and what kind of information is lacking in Wikipedia. She plans to continue offering the event on the first Thursday of each month, and to talk about new possibilities every time.
Soito would like people who plan to attend to RSVP so she can plan.
