Registration is now open for the first-ever BernCo Open Space Fun Run, a special event sponsored by Bernalillo County at the newly-renovated UNM North Golf Course Urban Open Space. This family event is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at 9 a.m. at the UNM North Golf Course Urban Open Space, 2201 Tucker Ave. N.E.

Registration is free and available online. The first 150 participants will receive a T-shirt and other promotional items from the event sponsors.

“We’re inviting residents from all across Bernalillo County to join us in celebrating our newest Open Space property,” Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins said. “Bernalillo County has invested in major improvements at this urban oasis and we want to celebrate and share them with the entire community.”

Bernalillo County has overseen $1.5 million in upgrades to the running trail, trees, landscaping and irrigation system at the UNM North Golf Course this year. The area is protected as an Urban Open Space under a special agreement between Bernalillo County and the University of New Mexico.

In addition to these improvements, the North Campus Neighborhood Association and the UNM Foundation are raising money to plant additional trees on the 79-acre open space. Participation is voluntary. Runners or walkers interested in raising funds for landscaping may contact Sara Koplik at sarakoplik@northcampusna.org or the UNM Foundation here.

The BernCo Open Space Fun Run activities are to include a 5K Fun Run and Walk at 9 a.m. and pet adoptions and information from Bernalillo County Animal Care Services. Leashed pets are welcome.
