A private memorial service to celebrate the lives of Briana Hillard and Matt Grant is set for Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Ballrooms. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This service is open to the Fraternity and Sorority Community, friends and family.

Hillard and Grant died following a hit-and-run car accident late Friday evening. Two other UNM students, who were in the same vehicle, were treated at the UNM Hospital and released after the weekend.

Albuquerque Police report that Joshua Leal, 21, was driving a stolen truck when he crashed into the students’ vehicle, causing it to flip. Leal and a passenger, Miguel Hernandez, 16, tried to flee from the accident, but were later arrested. Police also found a gun in the stolen truck. Leal is currently being held at the Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center, charged with vehicular homicide, child abuse, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, larceny of a firearm and tampering with evidence. Hernandez remains in the Juvenile Detention Center awaiting an appearance before a judge.

The UNM Fraternity and Sorority community has been deeply affected by this tragedy. Hillard was a senior in business administration and a sister in Pi Beta Phi. Grant was a junior in criminology and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

It is respectfully requested that the media allow the Fraternity and Sorority Community privacy as they honor the memories of their friends. Following the private memorial, a public balloon release on Smith Plaza, outside of Zimmerman Library is planned. The balloon release is expected to begin after the memorial concludes, between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
