The Office of the Chief Information Officer at UNM is sponsoring the 11th Annual App Contest, providing an opportunity for undergraduate students from UNM and CNM to develop and apply app design and presentation skills to plan useful mobile applications for the community.
Students have two opportunities to connect with expert mentors and form teams:
- UNM Meetup at Lobo Rainforest – Sept. 27, 3 to 6 p.m.
- CNM Meetup at CNM Stem Center – Oct. 19, 3 to 6 p.m.
- The deadline for submissions is Oct. 31.
Once students have formed their teams, they can attend a Prototype Session to become familiar with prototyping software…
Prizes include $5,000 for 1st place, $2,500 for 2nd place and $1,000 for 3rd place.
To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in at least one class at UNM or CNM. The App Prototypes will be judged by a panel of independent judges. Presentation Day and the Awards Ceremony will be held on Nov. 17 at the UNM Rainforest.
UNM and CNM faculty and staff, along with experienced mentors will provide support to these projects through workshops and mentorship. UNM, CNM, and the City of Albuquerque have invested in open data sets which are available to make the apps more useful. Data sets include: UNM events, class schedule data, campus locations, Route 66 images, bike paths, list of local businesses, and more.
Through this effort, the Office of the CIO hopes to inspire students to develop skills in concept, planning, design, development, collaboration, and presentation skills which are increasingly valuable in our information economy, and to yield apps that can improve the experience for UNM students and beyond.
The sooner you sign up, the more meet-ups and mentoring sessions you can join to help develop your app. The deadline to register for the App Contest is Oct. 31.
Special thanks to App Contest sponsors including UNM Office of the Chief Information Officer, UNM Rainforest Innovations and Central New Mexico Community College.
