The University of New Mexico Center for Native American Health (CNAH) and Wings of America presents a screening of "Run to the East" on Thursday, March 1 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at the Domenici Center auditorium on north campus.
The film tracks three high school seniors and Wings of America participants: Chantel Hunt (Navajo), Thomas Martinez (Navajo) and Dillon Shije (Zia Pueblo) who compete in national track meets and vie for college scholarships. Their stories are uplifting and an inspiration for change.
The film was inspired by a 2008 New York Times article about Navajo youth runners overcoming the poor health conditions that afflict a disproportionate number of residents on a 27,000-acre Navajo reservation.
There will be a pre-film panel discussion regarding ‘Sports as Prevention.' Light refreshments provided.
For more information, go to CNAH or call (505) 272-4100.
