"When it comes to Lobo athletics, I’m not just the president of UNM, I’m also a fan—and I am saddened by this disappointing but necessary decision by the Mountain West Conference to postpone fall sports. Our planning over the summer has always included working through numerous scenarios to provide our student-athletes with opportunities related to a Fall 2020 competitive season—but we were also cognizant that concern for the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and administrative staff might result in this eventuality as well.

"Having gotten to know many of the Lobo Athletics family and your personal stories, I wanted nothing more than to watch our Lobos show their strength, strategy and spirit this Fall as we brought back our pack after a long and difficult summer. The health and well-being of our community – including our student-athletes –remain our most important focus, and I will continue to work with Athletics Director Eddie Nuñez to support and prepare our student-athletes for future competition, as well as for their academic and personal success. Our hearts are with our student-athletes, their coaches and administrative staff, and our loyal Lobo fans."
