U.S. Diplomat-in-Residence (DIR) Antoinette Hurtado will visit The University of New Mexico Oct. 22-23. Hurtado will be on campus hosting information sessions, talks, and office hours, looking to talk to students about career and internship opportunities in Foreign Service and the State Department.

Hurtado graduated from Georgetown University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service. She later obtained a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University. She started her career straight out of graduate school as the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship recipient. This fellowship selects students from underrepresented groups to pursue a career in the Department of Foreign Service.

She has over 17 years as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State and currently serves as the Southwest Diplomat-in-Residence. The Southwest Region covers the states of Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Throughout her years of service, she’s had several domestic and oversee tours serving in various positions such as Political and Consular Officer in Canberra, Australia, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See in Rome, Italy, to her most recent post as a Public Diplomacy Instructor at the Foreign Service Institute in the U.S.

Hurtado will host the following sessions:

  • Engineering and STEM Information Session - Tuesday, Oct. 22, 3:30-4:30 p.m., CEC Stamm Room (Rm. 1044)
  • Management and Administration Information Session - Tuesday, Oct. 22, 5-6 p.m. (McKinnon Center, Rm. 1010)
  • Office Hours and Q&A - Wednesday, Oct. 23, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., UNM SUB (In the Curry Leaf)
  • UNM General/Campus-Wide Information Session - Wednesday, Oct. 23, 3:30-5 p.m. (Honors College Forum)

The various sessions are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, UNM Office of Career Services, UNM Honors College, UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute, UNM Language Learning Center and the UNM School of Engineering.
