University Libraries announces Zim Fest, a special welcome back event created to bring UNM students into Zimmerman Library and introduce them to its varied and vibrant spaces. Zim Fest  is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12, from 5-8 p.m., a UNM Lobo ID is the only ticket needed to an evening of fun, community, and discovery.

The event aims to welcome new students to campus and to reach out to those who may not typically see themselves as library users. “Sometimes students can feel intimidated to come to Zimmerman [or the library] because of its grand scale or not knowing how it all works,” said Adrienne Warner, first year experience librarian, and event co-lead, Marcy Botwick, Access Services library information specialist 3.

"We hope to make the library approachable and friendly and to inspire students to come back often. After all, library use is correlated with student success outcomes like persistence and higher-grade point average."

Attendees will be treated to an array of activities on each floor of Zimmerman Library including casino games from Double Down Party Company, Trivia Night from Trivia Dan, an E-gaming tournament run by the UNM Esports club, spooky tales of UNM, a special archival exhibit and activities in the Waters Room, and a scavenger hunt. There will also be Dion’s pizza, Rude Boys cookies, and the first 500 students will be entered in a chance to win giveaways with exciting prizes.

“We are excited to create a welcoming environment where students can connect and see the library as a space for both academic support and social engagement,” said Amy Jackson, associate dean of University Libraries. “Zim Fest is a celebration of our community, and we hope to see students from all walks of campus life join us for an evening of enjoyment and discovery.”

The event is a fantastic opportunity for students to unwind, meet new friends, and learn more about the resources and services available within the University Libraries.
