The Student Veterans Association of the University of New Mexico (SVUNM) holds a Veteran Awareness/Appreciation Fair with participation by many veteran organizations on Friday, Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on UNM Smith Plaza. Parking is available at the Lomas Parking Structure on the corner of Lomas and Yale Boulevards.

Additionally, SVUNM will conduct its annual “Mile of Coins” on Smith Plaza to raise funds to pay for local veterans to be removed from the waiting list to receive their service dog from Paws and Stripes. This is an opportunity for the UNM and New Mexico community to partner together to help this cause. Contact Kelsey Davis, SVUNM President at kdavis10@unm.edu to participate.

The University of New Mexico honors its veterans on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11 commencing with a Posting and Raising of the Colors at 9 a.m. at the flag pole south of Scholes Hall, followed by opening remarks from Kelsey Davis, president of Students Veterans of UNM, Tomás A. Aguirre, UNM Dean of Students (veteran) and Lt. Cmdr. Marilyn Dykman, USCG retired.  At 9:15 a.m., a moment of silence and a reading of the names of the UNM 2013 National Roll Call for New Mexico Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The roll call will be followed by guest speaker Aguirre, a military veteran, who will say a few words to the UNM community about great opportunities for student work with veterans on campus through their leadership and experiences.

The Veterans Resource Center holds an Open House from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the UNM Student Union Building, room 2002, main floor (south entrance).
