President Garnett S. Stokes of The University of New Mexico (UNM) has appointed David Williams, currently serving as Assistant Vice President/Deputy Athletic Director, as the Interim Vice President/Director of Athletics, effective immediately.
This appointment follows the departure of Eddie Nuñez, who recently accepted a position at the University of Houston, and is aimed at ensuring continuity and leadership within UNM Athletics during this transition period.
Williams brings over 30 years of experience in collegiate athletics administration to his new role. Prior to joining UNM, his career has included 13 years as a Division II Athletic Director and 20 years in upper-level administration, as well as 10 years as a collegiate coach.
President Stokes expressed confidence in Williams' ability to lead UNM Athletics during this interim period, stating, "Dave Williams has demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership within our athletic department. His deep understanding of collegiate athletics and his strong commitment to our student-athletes’ success make him the ideal choice to guide UNM Athletics at this time. With Dave Williams leading UNM Athletics, I am convinced that our forward momentum will continue unabated as we embark on a national search for a permanent Director of Athletics."
The terms of Williams' interim contract include an annual salary of $325,000 and will continue until a permanent Athletics Director is in place. The timeline for a national search for a permanent Athletic Director is being finalized and will be announced in the coming weeks.
“I appreciate and am grateful for the confidence shown in me and our department by President Stokes. It will be our job to continue the trajectory of success that Lobo Athletics has experienced under Eddie Nuñez,” said Williams.
