- Inside UNM
This year's official holiday ornament, featuring UNM's Alumni Memorial Chapel and benefiting the University of New Mexico Parent Association, is now on sale at all UNM Bookstore locations. The ornament, which honors the university's war dead, was designed by artist, Jana Fothergill, senior graphic designer for University Communication and Marketing.
Fothergill, who received her B.F.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University and her M.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, has been a commercial artist working with graphic design and illustration since college. She draws her inspiration from thinking about what fits with each subject.
"For example, John Gaw Meem, architect of University House, drew his inspiration from indigenous architecture," she said, "so that ornament was very clearly a takeoff on New Mexico tin ware with all the design and detail of the actual building."
The Duck Pond was the theme of the second ornament in which Fothergill chose a duck landing on the water.
With respect to the design process, Fothergill said she creates the original painting or drawing and designs the frame of the ornament using Illustrator. Upon completion, she sends the design to the same company that manufactures the White House ornaments.
The Alumni Memorial Chapel is the third in a series of holiday ornaments that benefits the UNM Parent Association.
"The 2010 edition of the UNM Parent Association Holiday Ornament features the Alumni Memorial Chapel which holds memories for many of us," said Maria Probasco, president, UNM Parent Association. "These collectible limited-edition ornaments are filled with UNM-history by showcasing the University's unique architecture and traditions. This is the third year of what has already become a standard stocking-stuffer for many of our students, faculty, staff, families and friends of the University."
The entire set, including "Hanging of the Greens" (2008), "UNM Duck Pond" (2009) and "UNM Alumni Memorial Chapel" (2010), is available at the UNM Bookstore on main campus and also the Medical/Legal Bookstore on north campus for $18.89 each. The ornaments are also available at the Lobo Den located in The Pit. All proceeds support the Parent Association.
The ornament set is also available online at UNM Bookstore.
