The UNM Bookstore begins its Noon Poetry Series April 6 in celebration of National Poetry Month. The event begins with Jessica Helen Lopez and continues each Wednesday through April 27. Other featured poets include Renny Golden, Mary Oishi and Lisa Gill. The series is open to the public. The UNM Bookstore is located at 2301 Central Ave. NE at the intersection of Cornell and Central.
April 6: Jessica Helen Lopez
Three time member of the City of Albuquerque Slam Team and the 2008 National Champion Winning UNM Lobo Slam Team. Lopez's upcoming book of poetry is entitled Always Messin' with Them Boys.
April 13: Renny Golden
Activist, poet and academic, Golden has been nominated and awarded for her social activism, writing and teaching. Her poetry collection Hour of the Furnaces was nominated for the National Book Award in 2000. Her latest book of poetry, Blood Desert (UNM Press) is a collection of historical narrative poems which give voice to New Mexico in the nineteenth century.
April 20: Mary Oishi
Since arriving in Albuquerque in 1999, Oishi has performed and published poetry "in the spirit of changing the world through the power of art." The poems in Spirit Birds They Told Me bring a message of trauma and recovery, war and reconciliation and the passage from personal shame to self-regard.
April 27: Lisa Gill
Gill has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry. She is the author of Red as a Lotus, Mortar & Pestle, Dark Enough, and The Relenting. Her latest work, Caput Nili recounts the true story of what happened when she threatened to hold up an MRI clinic in 2003.
