The UNM Bookstore hosts a book-signing for Kari Bovée to sign copies of her book, Girl with a Gun: An Annie Oakley Mystery on Friday, Sept. 21 at 12 p.m.

Bovée’s novel revolves around 15-year-old, Annie Oakley, the sole supporter of her widowed mother and two siblings. As an expert markswoman and independent spirit, she hunts game to sell to local mercantilists to make ends meet instead of accepting a marriage proposal that could solve all her problems. After a stunning performance in a shooting contest against a handsome and famous sharpshooter, Frank Butler, Annie is offered a position in the renowned Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

Finally, Annie believes she has a chance to save her foreclosed, family farm and make her dreams come true. When her Native American assistant is found dead in her tent, Annie is dubious when hearing the death was due to natural causes. Later, another innocent person is also murdered causing Annie to think the deaths are related to her. In addition to the murders, her prized horse, Buck, is stolen. Annie discovers the solution to her problem is buried in a padlocked Civil War trunk belonging to the show’s manager, Derence Le Fleur. With the help of a sassy, blue-blue blooded reporter, Annie sets out to find her horse, solve murders and clear her name.

A native New Mexican, Bovée has been a finalist in many writing competitions including the Land of Enchantment Romance Writers’ 2012 Rebecca contest in the Romantic Suspense category, the North Texas Romance Writers of America Chapter’s 2014 Great Expectations contest, and the Romance Writers of America’s Daphne de Maurier contest.
