Author Sandra K. Schackel speaks about and sign copies of her new book, "Working the Land: The Stories of Ranch and Farm Women in the Modern American West" (University Press of Kansas) on Thursday, March 29 at 1 p.m.  at the UNM Bookstore.  The book includes oral histories from more than 40 women from Ariz., Colo., Idaho, N.M., Ore. and Texas recalling their experiences as ranchers and farmers in a modernizing west. Schackel provides a deeper understanding of the West's development over the last 50 years.

Shackel is a professor emeritus of  history at Boise State University and the author of various studies in the social history of the twentieth century West, including "Western Women's Lives: Continuity and Change in the Twentieth Century (2003, UNM Press)."
