In alignment with President David J. Schmidly's UNM in the 21st Century: A New President's Vision, Lobo Real Estate Development joined forces with American Campus Communities to break ground on the new South Campus Students Apartments project during a ceremony on June 17.
The new 12,000 sq. ft. housing community will be located off I-25 and Avenida Cesar Chavez, just west of University Arena, and will be the first of its kind on the UNM campus. Floor plan designs include four private-bedroom, fully furnished apartment-style units, with full-size beds (864 in total), private bathrooms, fully equipped kitchens and washers and dryers.
"We have been planning and discussing adequate student housing for several years and this project will offer our students a first-class resident apartment experience," said Eliseo Torres, vice president for Student Affairs. "It is an excellent project to be able to recruit, retain and graduate our students."
The complex was designed with input from UNM students, faculty, staff and neighborhood groups and will offer plenty of amenities including on-site management offices, a business center, study and meeting rooms, game room, state-of-the-art fitness center and resort-style swimming pool.
"This allows us to keep the connection to the university experience especially for our upper classmen and gives them a progressive model of options to choose from for their campus living experience from their freshman year all the way to their senior year," said Walter Miller, UNM associate vice president for Student Life.
The goal of the project is to bolster the existing residential experience and expand the academically oriented housing option for upper-division students.
"It also enhances the connectivity to the institution for the student's total experience, both classroom and co-curricular," Miller said.
The South Campus Student Apartments opens to undergraduate upperclassmen in the fall 2011.
