The University of New Mexico has 127 postdocs who make major contributions to the research enterprise and each year along with universities across the country, we celebrate them during the third week of September for National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
“Last year, we invested in our postdocs with the creation of the UNM Office of Postdoctoral Affairs because it's essential that our researchers know and feel supported as they navigate this first path in their professional career," Vice President for Research Ellen Fisher said. "Postdocs bring unique and exceptional perspectives to the research landscape that ultimately build and expand upon the pillars of being a research university, making contributions to our local communities and communities around the world."
The National Postdoc Association (NPA) has sponsored this week to recognize postdocs since 2009. In 2010, National Postdoc Appreciation Week was officially recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives. A postdoctoral fellow is not considered a students, but an individual professionally conducting research after the completion of their doctoral studies.
“Postdoctoral scholars play a significant role in the success of UNM as effective researchers, teachers and mentors,” said Raquela Thomas, Office for Postdoctoral Affairs coordinator. “The passion and work ethic required to be a postdoc result in this group having an impact disproportionate to its relatively small size. These scholars deserve a huge amount of appreciation, so be sure to thank a postdoc.”
In 2023, The Office of the Vice President for Research created the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA). The office provides programs focused on career development, scholarly activities, community-building, and mentoring relationships to postdoctoral scholars across all UNM campuses. OPA is the administrative home for postdoctoral scholars where they can access a variety of resources including training, education, funding, and networking opportunities.
