One of the nation's leading Latina journalists, Maria Hinojosa, who has helped tell America's untold stories and brought to light unsung heroes in America and abroad for 25 years, will deliver the keynote address at the UNM fall commencement on Friday, Dec. 14, 6 p.m. at University Arena, The Pit.
Approximately 1,750 students are projected to receive degrees from UNM's Albuquerque and Extended University campuses as follows: 1,135 bachelor's degrees, 375 master's degrees, 59 doctorates, 23 juris doctorates, six medical doctorate, five graduate certificates, five educational specialist degrees and one pharmacy doctorate. An official degree count is determined following Commencement.
At UNM-Gallup, 67 associate degrees and 18 certificates; at Los Alamos, 10 associate degrees; at Taos, 14 associate degrees and two certificates; and at Valencia, 50 associate degrees and four certificates, are projected to be awarded.
Hinojosa, who recently launched The Futuro Media Group with the mission to produce multi-platform, community-based journalism, has won top honors in American journalism including four Emmy's, the John Chancellor Award, the Studs Terkel Community Media Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged, the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for best documentary.
UNM President Robert G. Frank will give opening remarks and confer degrees and UNM Regents President Jack Fortner will greet graduates on behalf of the UNM Board of Regents. UNM regents, administrators, deans and faculty are among the platform group.
University Secretary Vivian Valencia is chief marshal. Donald "Duffy" Swan, president of the Alumni Association, will offer closing remarks.
The prelude and processional will be played by UNM Bands. Rebecca Hellbom, soprano, and 2012 UNM fall graduate with a Bachelor's of Music in vocal performance, will sing the national anthem and alma mater.
College, branch and departmental convocation ceremonies are scheduled Dec. 13-15.
