University of New Mexico Vice President for Student Affairs Eliseo “Cheo” Torres announced that Dean of Students Tomás Aguirre has resigned to take a position at Texas A&M-Commerce beginning in spring 2016.

Aguirre accepted a position as assistant vice president and dean of Campus Life and Student Development at Texas A&M-Commerce

"I would like to congratulate UNM Dean of Students, Dr. Tomas Aguirre, on his new position at Texas A&M University-Commerce, and thank him for his dedication to the UNM Dean of Students office,” said Torres. “One of the highlights of Dean Aguirre’s tenure at UNM was the development and implantation of the LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center.”

Aguirre, who has been at UNM since July 2013, was grateful for the opportunity to serve as Dean of Students at UNM.

“First and foremost, being the students “Dean” has been both an honor and a privilege,” Aguirre said. “Whether they were inspiring me or challenging me, at the end of the day they made me a better person and practitioner, and for that I will always be grateful. I will also miss the people that shared my philosophy and always put students first.”

Aguirre mentioned two initiatives during his tenure that he helped implement including LoboRESPECT and the LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center. LoboRESPECT is the name of UNM’s comprehensive approach to preventing and responding to sexual violence in our campus community, while the Advocacy Center is a location that provides a safe and welcoming environment for students to receive support and advocacy services for a number of areas.

“Obviously projects like the LoboRESPECT team and Advocacy Center immediately come to mind, but to be perfectly honest, it was the processes and people that made these accomplishments happen in the first place that I am the most proud of,” Aguirre said.

Aguirre’s last day at UNM is Jan. 4. A search for his replacement will begin as soon as possible.
