Beginning Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, the Physical Plant Department (PPD) will assume responsibility and ownership of the UNM fueling station, located at the Physical Plant Automotive Center, and will remain operational strictly for PPD vehicles and maintenance equipment. The decision was made because the UNM Purchasing Department, which owned and managed the fueling station, determined it was not cost effective to continue its operation.
The Purchasing Department was unable to offer competitively priced fuel mainly because the quantities needed to supply the campus were not great enough for a reduced purchasing price. With PPD being the largest user of fuel on campus, it was determined PPD would keep the fueling station operational for the department.
“We have more than 200 vehicles and equipment that need fuel, so it makes sense for us to purchase our own fuel and use the station for our operations instead of using fuel stations off campus,” R. Gary Smith, PPD associate director for Maintenance and Operations, said.
