Come celebrate Earth Day at the University of New Mexico’s 7th Annual Sustainability Expo. The event will be held on Cornell Mall Tuesday, April 21 from 10:30 am to 2:30 p.m. The campus community is invited to join in the Earth Day inspired festivities.

The Expo offers an opportunity to interact with sustainability-minded organizations at a variety of engaging displays and activities. There will be a growers’ market, food trucks, live entertainment, an arts & crafts fair, bicycle auction and much more. This year, the Expo features the ASUNM Arts and Crafts Studio offering a mini crafts fair. In addition, the Staff Council hosts a book exchange in the SUB during the Expo.

Learn about sustainable initiatives on campus and in the community, grab lunch, connect with potential employers, meet local farmers, and enjoy the fun, energetic atmosphere.

The event is organized by UNM Sustainability Studies Program students in the Growers’ Market Practicum class who are passionate about educating campus and community members about sustainability. Throughout the semester, students in the Growers' Market Practicum class work in committees that plan and execute all aspects of the UNM Sustainability Expo. Student teams work on all aspects of the event including marketing, vendor relations, logistics and education as part of their overall grade for the semester.

A number of other campus organizations are also involved with coordinating and supporting the Expo, including the ASUNM Arts and Crafts Studio, the UNM Office of Sustainability, the Associated Students of UNM, and UNM Parking and Transportation Services.

In addition to the campus participants, other participating vendors include La Montanita Co-op, TEDx Abq, Transition UNM, Osceola Energy, NM Wilderness Alliance,  Agri-Cultura Network, 111 Media Collective and Nourish International.

Osceola Energy will have a solar charging station set up and the ABQ Old School will have information available about their community-based DIY classes. There will also be an interactive seed mural and a trash sculpture that attendees can add their own artistic touch.

Grab lunch at the growers’ market, and stick around for live music and breakdancing during the noon hour. The Irrational Pie and Street Food Institute food trucks will be serving up pizza and tacos.

Local farmers will offer a selection of fresh spring produce. Le Paris Bakery will have their famous baguettes, and Santa Fe Honey will be selling their delectable honey-based tepache drinks. Home gardeners can take home seedlings and chefs-in-the-making can partake in cooking demonstrations. There will also be live screen printing by the 111 Media Collective, so don’t forget to bring a t-shirt.

In the spirit of sustainability, the 7th Annual Sustainability Expo will be a zero waste event; participation and support are encouraged.
