University Secretary seeks volunteers

The Office of the University Secretary seeks volunteers to assist with Freshman Convocation.

Please consider giving some of your time to welcome the Freshman Class of 2021 and their families to campus, to show them how excited UNM is to have them.

Volunteer hours will be in shifts of two to three hours between 2 and 7:30 p.m. that day. Fill out the short form and sign up to volunteer here.

Schedule of Events:

  • The Freshman Convocation, from 4 to 5 Popejoy Hall (doors open at 2:45 p.m.) Freshmen are given their free UNM T-shirts and seated together as a class in Popejoy Hall. The ceremony will open with a welcome from the Provost, which will be followed by performances and videos to give freshmen and their families a glimpse of student life at UNM.
  • A reception immediately following the ceremony, freshmen and their guests are invited to the Student Union Building and Mall area for a reception with hot dogs and ice cream at approximately 5 p.m.
  • Classroom tours with class crawls. Students will meet at Cornell Mall immediately after the ceremony and can print out their class schedule for campus volunteers to help them find where their classes are on a campus tour.
  • Movie night on Johnson Field. Guardian of the Galaxy Vol.2 will be shown drive-in style.

During the convocation, freshmen will be seated separately from their guests/family. Guests will be assigned seats in Rodey Theatre, then Keller Hall on a first-come, first-serve basis with print-at-home tickets. The Student Union Grand Ballroom will be used for overflow once the other venues have filled up.

Freshman Family Day recognizes all incoming freshmen, and introduces them and their families to the university administrators, faculty and staff, all of whom have been preparing for this day for a long time. The University wants incoming students to know that they are about to enter a new phase in their lives, an academic adventure, which will prepare them to lead a rewarding and fulfilling life.
