The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) will offer a certificate program in welding beginning Fall Semester, 2019. The 36 credit-hour program is designed to train students to enter the workforce as welders after one year of coursework.

The new program has garnered strong endorsement from Los Alamos National Laboratory, a major employer of welders in the region.

“Los Alamos supports its regional higher-education partners as they expand their offerings in ways that help the Laboratory meet its workforce needs while diversifying the economy of Northern New Mexico,” said Nan Sauer, director of the Partnerships & Pipeline Office at Los Alamos National Laboratory. “The one-year welding certificate offered by UNM-LA works toward those goals, so we are excited by this new addition to the options at the campus.”

The welding certificate program focuses on building skills specific to welding careers. The program allows students to obtain an academic credential while learning an employable skill, thus creating a pathway for entry into the workforce.

“UNM-LA has offered Beginning Welding and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) courses for many years,” said Dean of Instruction Sharon Hurley. “These welding courses have consistently filled to capacity every semester. We are pleased to be able to expand our welding courses into a certificate program that trains students to enter the workforce with both academic and workforce credentials. We are grateful for the support of UNM-Albuquerque, the New Mexico Higher Education Department, Los Alamos National Laboratory, SER Jobs Progress, and the Local Union 412 in creating this program.”

Students in the welding certificate program will study national safety standards, blueprint reading, arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, gas metal arc welding (MIG), and gas tungsten arc welding (TIG). UNM-LA will offer three beginning welding course sections in the fall semester and one section of MIG and TIG Welding. Fall classes begin August 19. Registration for summer and fall classes opened on April 15.
