The University of New Mexico’s Office of Equal Opportunity has appointed Sara Cliffe as interim Title IX coordinator effective Aug. 20.

Cliffe replaces Heather Cowan who is stepping down from the Title IX coordinator position to take a position as an assistant director at the University of Michigan. Cowan’s last day at UNM is Aug. 17.

“Heather has been instrumental in moving the University forward in gender equity and Title IX compliance,” said OEO Director Francie Cordova. “The Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) and campus partners are grateful for Heather’s knowledge and dedication.”

Cliffe, who currently serves as OEO compliance manager, is a graduate of Northern Illinois University College of Law in 2000. She spent 12 years in private practice representing public employers and entities before returning to Northern Illinois as director of investigations and compliance and deputy Title IX coordinator.

Among other duties, Cliffe conducted or reviewed all investigations including Title IX investigations, drafted the University’s Title IX Policies & Procedures and trained employees on their responsibilities under Title IX and other requirements.

A national search is underway for UNM’s Title IX coordinator position. The position is posted on UNM Jobs and advertised in Higher Education sources nationally.
