Following a discussion this weekend between University of New Mexico President David J. Schmidly, Raymond Sanchez, President of the UNM Board of Regents, and Executive Vice President for Health Sciences Paul Roth, MD. Dr. Roth has agreed to serve as Acting President of UNM until President Schmidly's return to campus.

President Schmidly sent the following statement to the UNM community this morning, Monday, Oct. 18:

"Janet and I want to thank all those who have been so extraordinarily kind in their words of encouragement and prayers for me and my family in the last two months. It has not been easy. I am happy to report that I am back in Albuquerque. However my recovery has been gradual and I am still not able to fully resume my normal schedule based on the advice of my medical team.

I want to thank the dedicated and professional physicians and staff of UNM Hospital who are now overseeing my care. With their help and guidance, I am looking forward to a full recovery.

I fully expect to return as soon as I am given full medical clearance to resume my duties.

Following a discussion with Raymond Sanchez, President of the UNM Board of Regents and Dr. Paul Roth, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, Dr. Roth has agreed to serve as Acting President until my return," said President Schmidly.
