President David Schmidly received the "Premio Ticul Alvarez" by members of the Asociación Mexicana de Mastozoologia on Tuesday, Aug. 17, in a special ceremony at University House. The award is presented every two years to a professional in the field of mammalogy with a major emphasis of that research focused on Mexico.
Schmidly received the award for his lifetime of research, including publishing eight books and 76 journal articles, as well as his commitment to working with students.
"Your high level of commitment contributes toward making you a highly recognized, able researcher," AMMAC President Sonia Gallina Tessaro said. "Your teaching skills are also remarkable, and your interactions with students have always been greatly praised and had a very positive effect in the work of many other people."
The presentation ceremony at University House was videotaped and will be shown at the organization's conference in Mexico in September.
