Finding Abbey: The Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Desert Grave by Sean Prentiss won the 2015 National Outdoor Book Award for History/Biography. The National Outdoor Book Awards—sponsored by the National Outdoor Book Awards Foundation, Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education, and Idaho State University—recognize the best in outdoor writing and publishin

In Finding Abbey, Prentiss combines an account of his quest to find environmental writer Edward Abbey's secret grave with a creative biography of Abbey. The author draws upon research, travel, and interviews with some of Abbey's closest friends as he attempts to unravel Abbey's complicated legacy.

“It’s a unique and clever approach to a biographical work,” said Ron Watters, chair of the National Outdoor Book Awards. “Prentiss, in his attempt to find the grave, travels from Edward Abbey’s birthplace in Pennsylvania to the empty spaces of the desert Southwest. Along the way, we learn about Abbey—and Prentiss...The book is a creative treat. It’s a warm-hearted and elegantly written work and simply a joy to read.”
