Getaway adventures, updates to Johnson Gym, and an on-campus bicycle shop are just a few of the amenities available through The University of New Mexico's Recreational Services, and the department’s work recently caught the attention of a national university recreation magazine.
UNM Recreational Services is featured on the cover of the January/February edition of Campus Rec, the premier business resource for college and university recreation centers.
The story highlights UNM’s placement at the center of the Land of Enchantment and how the University has worked to create programming and space that meet the diverse needs of the campus. Recreational Services offers students modern fitness equipment and an indoor track at Johnson Gym, a swimming pool, numerous fitness classes every week, affordable outdoor equipment rentals, a bicycle shop, planned excursions, personal training and more.
James Todd, director of UNM Recreational Services discussed how the 2021 updates made to Johnson Gym and fun programming help bring students to campus.
“We try to make ourselves a destination you want to come back to,” Todd told Campus Rec.
Charles Gwinn, head of UNM’s Outdoor Adventure Center, bicycle shop, getaway adventures, and challenge course, talked with Campus Rec about the importance of cross-campus collaboration in promoting the department’s offerings as well as the beauty of the state.
“New Mexico is an amazing place where you can do nearly any outdoor activity,” Gwinn told Campus Rec. “Because of our high mountains, great expanses and rich cultural history, we’re able to offer exciting, year-round adventures. New Mexico is an outdoor paradise, and I encourage all to visit.”
