UNM Parking & Transportation Services (PATS) announced today that the ABQRide Free Bus Pass Program will continue for the 2010-11 academic year. The program provides current students, staff and faculty free, unlimited travel on the City of Albuquerque bus system, ABQRide, through the use of a sticker placed on university-issued identification cards. This will be the fourth year the program will be offered at UNM.

"We're very excited about the continuation of the free city bus pass program for UNM faculty, staff and students and our growing partnership with the City of Albuquerque and ABQRide," said Clovis Acosta, director of PATS. "Together, with this program, we can make meaningful improvements in the region's air quality, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the overall quality and livability of our community."

The ABQRide Free Bus Pass Program began in 2007 for UNM students and was expanded to include staff and faculty the following year.  The program allows members of the UNM community to travel on any ABQRide bus for free, including the city's popular Rapid Ride buses, except for special event buses, such as the park and ride program for the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta or State Fair. The program is widely used by students, staff, and faculty to commute to and from UNM.

"UNM ridership on ABQRide continues to grow," said Acosta. "In the 2009-2010 school year we had over 800,000 UNM rides on the ABQRide system."

To receive the 2010-11 program sticker, current students, staff, or faculty must prove their eligibility. Students must bring a copy of the fall 2010 class schedule to a distribution location; staff and faculty must bring a printout of their expanded record in the UNM directory.

ABQRide Free Bus Pass Stickers will be available at the following locations beginning Monday, Aug. 2.

  • UNM Student Union Building –Transportation Information Center (Plaza Level)

  • UNM Student Union Building Welcome Desk

  • UNM Medical/Legal Bookstore

  • UNM Parking and Transportation Services

  • UNM Hospital Parking and Transportation Services

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 1 students, staff, and faculty will also be able to receive ABQRide Free Bus Pass Stickers at the UNM Bookstore on main campus.

The free bus pass sticker program is just one of many free and low cost transportation programs offered by PATS. For example, users of ABQRide might also be interested in the Zipcar car-sharing program on campus which allows members of Zipcar to rent cars by the hour providing greater flexibility and convenience for alternative transportation users. Hourly rates for Zipcar start at $8 and include gas, insurance, and miles. For more information about ABQRide, Zipcar, or the other programs available, visit PATS' Transportation Information Center in the plaza level of the Student Union Building.
