As the state’s top research university, The University of New Mexico is home to some of the most cutting edge research. Associated with such research activities are potential occupational and environmental hazards, such as exposure to hazardous chemicals, chemical releases, electric shocks, lab explosions and exposures to high energy waves. These hazards must be anticipated, identified, prevented and mitigated, in a manner that is compliant with applicable federal, state and local regulatory schemes.

The Environmental and Chemical Safety staff at SRS does just that on a daily basis. The staff is comprised of Carla Domenici, director; Michael Tuttle, interim associate director; and other staff listed below.

Together these individuals handle several tasks aimed at providing a safe work environment at UNM. Examples of such tasks are lab safety inspections, chemical spill response, hazardous material pickup and disposal, chemical fume hood inspections, compliance reporting, chemical inventories and training.
