As the state’s top research university, The University of New Mexico is home to some of the most cutting edge research. Associated with such research activities are potential occupational and environmental hazards, such as exposure to hazardous chemicals, chemical releases, electric shocks, lab explosions and exposures to high energy waves. These hazards must be anticipated, identified, prevented and mitigated, in a manner that is compliant with applicable federal, state and local regulatory schemes.
The Environmental and Chemical Safety staff at SRS does just that on a daily basis. The staff is comprised of Carla Domenici, director; Michael Tuttle, interim associate director; and other staff listed below.
Together these individuals handle several tasks aimed at providing a safe work environment at UNM. Examples of such tasks are lab safety inspections, chemical spill response, hazardous material pickup and disposal, chemical fume hood inspections, compliance reporting, chemical inventories and training.
Che Shu-Nyamboli, Environmental Health Manager
Shu-Nyamboli oversees the Environmental Affairs and Chemical Safety programs at SRS. These programs ensure compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Transportation (DOT), New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED), and Albuquerque Environmental Health Department (AHED) standards. Shu-Nyamboli has been with SRS since December 2013. Prior to joining UNM, he worked with Native American Tribes in New Mexico in the areas of environmental compliance and natural resources management. He has a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and Science, a master’s degree in Natural Resources Management and a BS in Environmental Science.
John Archuleta, Hazardous Materials Specialist
Archuleta is responsible for managing hazardous substances at UNM, to include pickup, storage and disposal of chemical and biological waste. He is also in charge of providing clearance for surplus materials before they are disposed of. Archuleta has worked for SRS Since 1995. Prior to joining UNM he worked for Sandia National Labs in the areas of hazardous waste, property reapplication and EH&S. He also worked for Gulton Data System, a Mark IV company, as a process controller for telemetry, timing, control, command systems for the aerospace industry. He attended Manzano High School, and is a New Mexico.
Michael Buchanan, Environmental Health and Safety Tech III
Buchanan works in the area of environmental compliance, specifically stormwater, wastewater, chemical safety and air quality compliance. He also assists with collection, processing and disposal of chemical waste, and provides N95 respirator training to UNM staff. He is from Las Cruces, N.M. and went to New Mexico State University where he obtained his Bachelor’s in Environmental Science. Buchanan has been with SRS since April 2015. Prior to joining UNM, he worked for TRC Solutions, LLC as an Environmental Scientist and for Oso Biopahrmaceuticals, LLC as an EH&S technician.
Carin Kelly, Safety Specialist
Kelly joined SRS in December 2015, and works in the areas of lab safety, chemical inventories and laser safety. Her background is in process and quality engineering and Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S). Prior to joining SRS, Kelly worked for UTC Aerospace Systems / Goodrich Corporation as an EH&S Engineer. She has also worked for EMS, Inc, General Electric Healthcare, URS Corporation, Motorola and Johnson & Johnson. She has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from UNM, and a Master of Science in Environmental Technology Management from Arizona State University. Kelly is a New Mexico native.
Jacob Lemmons, Chemical Inventory Specialist
Lemmons conducts chemical inventories for SRS. He is an undergraduate student at UNM and is working toward a degree in biochemistry, and hopes go into medical research. He has been in Albuquerque for two years, but grew up in Denver, Colo. In his down time, Lemmons likes hiking or running.
