For the 7th consecutive year, the UNM Division of Student Affairs has teamed up with El Mezquite Market to host the annual Mezquite Golf Tournament on Friday, Aug. 21 at the Isleta Eagle Golf Tournament.

The tournament is a benefit to raise funds for scholarships for UNM students. Additional funds for the scholarship have come from the Mexican Consulate of Albuquerque’s office.

“We are grateful each year for the generosity of El Mezquite Market owner Sergio Bermudez who brings together a number of donors to contribute to a worthy cause,” said Dr. Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, vice president for UNM Student Affairs. “I would also like to thank the Consul’s office for matching the total amount of scholarship funds generated by the golf tournament.”

Teams of four can participate via sponsorships of $750 - $5,000 per team. To date the tournament has raised over $300,000 and helped over 100 recipients take another step toward their higher education goals.

“The extent in which the scholarship has benefited me is by aiding me with college expenses and various types of support that I need in order to be successful in college,” said Crystal Saenz, one of the scholarship recipients. “I am extremely grateful for attaining this scholarship because without it, I would not have the great opportunity to be attending the University of New Mexico.”

Scholarship applications will be available in September of this year and awarded in November. For questions or more information about the scholarships, please contact the College Enrichment and Outreach Program at (505) 277-5321.
