College is more than a lecture hall and lab at The University of New Mexico. Lobos are encouraged to live, work and play on campus in order to become the thinkers and doers of their generation.
Support outside the classroom that ultimately supports success inside the classroom, falls on the shoulders of one of UNM’s largest divisions, Student Affairs; a network of people and departments that is best described by the notion “it takes a village.”
Led by Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, the Division of Student Affairs is the primary student services provider for the University’s large and varied student population.
“Student Affairs is divided into two parts,” says Torres. “Student Life, focusing on student development and learning experiences outside the classroom and Student Services, which provides support to help recruit, retain and graduate underrepresented and low-income first-generation students.”
Student Affairs departments are home to support services for students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, women, student health care, campus housing, student entertainment and recreation, academic support services including advisement, tutoring and mentoring, child care, professional development and career services and the Student Union Building.
As a division, Student Affairs has established inclusive partnerships, programs, facilities and services that enrich academic and career goals, and enhance the quality of life for students and alumni.
“In Student Affairs we take pride in being a Lobo,” says Kyle Biederwolf, president of the Associated Students of UNM. “We understand being a Lobo does mean more than going to class. It’s creating that community on campus that creates the college experience.”
