Systems and websites at the University of New Mexico were inaccessible this morning for approximately two hours due to a "denial of service" attack on a departmental server. The attack overwhelmed the UNM firewalls, preventing logins and transactions, although all UNM data and servers remained protected and safe.

Since most students, faculty and administrators depend heavily on UNM applications, the impact was far-reaching. When Information Technologies isolated the offending server, access to services was restored.

IT is continuing the investigation to prevent any future occurrence of this kind of outage, and apologizes for the inconvenience.
