The University of New Mexico is set to host an inaugural New Mexico Postdoctoral Research Symposium on Friday, Sept. 22.

The event is the perfect opportunity for UNM postdocs to present their research in front of the campus community. Postdocs will have the chance to network, share ideas, receive feedback, and initiate collaborations with others at UNM and institutions across New Mexico. Postdocs must submit abstracts by Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. There will be poster and oral presentations, cash prizes, and refreshments. Researchers, principal investigators, and postdoc mentors are encouraged to attend and support UNM postdocs.

“I encourage all researchers and postdoc mentors to support postdoc participation in all career development, educational, and networking opportunities during their time here at UNM and beyond,” said Ellen Fisher, UNM vice president for research. “Although I acknowledge that time spent conducting experiments and writing is crucial to advancing careers in research, it is equally important we prepare our postdocs to take their next steps as well-rounded individuals with the connections and additional skills necessary to be successful throughout their careers.”

Postdoctoral fellowships are inherently a training position, therefore the UNM Office of the Vice President for Research and the SOM Research Education Office have been working to provide effective and engaging opportunities for postdocs. UNM recently established the Office for Postdoctoral Affairs to recognize the importance of postdocs to the research enterprise, and to provide specific resources and programming for postdocs at UNM.

“The critical contributions and tireless work of postdocs are becoming more recognized nationwide, and I am proud that UNM has stepped up to support our amazing postdocs. Please thank a postdoc during National Postdoc Appreciation Week,” said Raquela Thomas, UNM Office of Postdoctoral Affairs director

National Postdoc Appreciation Week, Sept. 18-23, is a great way for postdocs and others to network at UNM events happening each day. Details can be found here.
