The UNM Veterans Resource Center, UNM Student Veterans Association and the UNM Staff Council will host a Veterans Day celebration Friday, Nov. 11. Beginning at 9 a.m., a Posting and Raising of the Colors at the flag pole just south of Scholes Hall will take place with remarks by retired USCG Lt. Cdr. Marilyn Dykman.
The event then moves into the UNM Alumni Memorial Chapel for a reading of the names of New Mexico's Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. UNM Graduate Alea Nadeem, USAF, will be the guest speaker and Mario Montoya will play "Taps." A moment of silence will follow.
The UNM Student Veterans Association will also hold a Veteran Awareness/Appreciation Fair with other campus groups in the Student Union Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Veterans and non-veterans alike are invited to attend. Information will be provided on assistance and issues specific to UNM's student veterans. Also, the UNM Student Veterans Association will hold its annual "Mile of Coins" fundraiser for veterans scholarships.
