The 2019 National Senior Games (NSG) are coming to Albuquerque this summer, and they need help, and lots of it when the Games take place June 14-25 at venues across the city including The University of New Mexico.

Albuquerque is the host city for the 2019 National Senior Games presented by Humana. Approximately 10,000 athletes from all 50 states and some international countries are expected to participate in 20 sports for women and men ages 50+. In order to make this event possible, more than 3,000 volunteers are required to assist at more than 15 indoor and outdoor venues, including several at The University of New Mexico, in a variety of roles.

As a volunteer at the largest sporting event for seniors, you will be supporting the mission of the National Senior Games to promote physical fitness for seniors nationwide, provide year-round opportunities, and motivate adults age 50 and older to push themselves while having fun all within the Albuquerque area.

There are many benefits to volunteering including:

  • Give back to your ABQ community and these hard-working, inspiring athletes
  • Share pride for your community with others
  • Get educated and involved in the National Senior Games
  • Networking opportunities; meet new people
  • Build your resume and gain valuable event management skills
  • Volunteer with your friends and have fun!

Volunteers typically serve a minimum of four hours and will receive training. Each volunteer will receive a free T-shirt and admittance into the volunteer hospitality area. Volunteer hospitality will also be available throughout your shifts and incentives from local restaurants and entertainment.

There are nearly 30 categories and many subcategories where help is needed. Individual volunteers can sign up in any category and subcategories for as many shifts as they’d like. Specific areas of need include:

  • Hospitality
  • Scorekeeping
  • Venue Coordination
  • Athlete Registration
  • Awards
  • And more!

Corporate and organization group volunteer opportunities available. Bring your employees & their families together to give back to the community. Volunteerism also helps employee bonding and team building and highlight your company or organization to the community with special opportunities for recognition of organizations & groups.

Local organizers are encouraging large groups of volunteers to signup together through corporate and or organizations. For example, a group of UNM employees could volunteer as a group for the Celebration of Athletes, which will be held at Dreamstyle Arena on June 19 or any the several events that will be held at various UNM venues including basketball, golf, and track and field including race walking and power walking.

In addition to volunteering, this is one opportunity for UNM volunteers to log hours that will count towards the UNM Gives campaign later this year. UNM has a proud history of engagement with local, state, and global communities. The University encourages members of the UNM Pack -- staff, faculty, students, and alumni -- to continue engaging in meaningful ways to address community-identified needs and improve the lives of others.
