According to a Pew Research Center survey, teachers spend on average $500 a year out of their own pocket on school supplies. The UNM Family Development Program through the WE Resource Center supports both early childhood educators as well as families of young children by offering low-cost memberships which provides access to the materials.
The WE provides high quality recycled materials in support of understanding the essential role of play for children’s optimal learning and development. It features a showroom and warehouse full of safe, recycled items, often factory extras that would have otherwise ended up in the New Mexico landfill.
Varying from the one-of-a-kind to the ordinary, the collection includes foam punch-outs, caps from perfume bottles, beads, paper, and an array of other items in every imaginable color and shape, perfect for inspiring any child or adult to play.
To celebrate the success of the WE, the public is invited to the Center on May 3 at 5 p.m. for food, tours of the facility and opportunities to learn about its programs.
