Marc Saavedra has resigned from his position as director of Government and Community Affairs at the University of New Mexico. Executive Vice President of Administration David Harris received the resignation following a private meeting with Saavedra.

During that meeting, Harris indicated that it would be best for all parties if Saavedra were to resign, to which Saavedra agreed. Saavedra has been on administrative leave from UNM following his arrest on July 23 on DWI charges. The resignation will be effective Aug. 8, 2014.

“We’d like to thank Marc for his service and we regret the circumstances that led to this decision,” Harris said. “We are pleased that he is taking responsibility and the opportunity to deal with the issues that created this situation.”

The University has asked Connie Beimer, Government Relations officer, to temporarily handle day-to-day operations in the department until next steps are determined.
