In a series of meetings with students and the local community, American Campus Communities has offered a glimpse of the new residential housing that will be built on the UNM campus. Demolition of Santa Ana Dormitory and two Student Resource Center units is scheduled for mid-May after the end of the spring semester. Construction on the new units will begin as soon as possible.
ACC will build four housing units for freshmen students that are scheduled to open in fall 2012. The units will be more than a quarter of a million square feet and will hold 1,020 beds. It will add more than 800 beds to the housing inventory on UNM's main campus. To view the preliminary drawings visit, ACC Housing.
UNM administrators emphasize the additional housing is part of an overall plan to allow more undergraduates to live on campus. Walter Miller, associate vice president for Student Life says, "Our long term goal is to increase the six-year graduation rate at UNM and research shows us that students who live on campus are more likely to graduate."
This is the first time a developer has built housing on the UNM campus. ACC is funding the construction and will lease and manage the housing units. A ground lease now under negotiation will spell out precisely how the units will be managed.
This is the second residential housing development ACC has built for UNM. The first development, Lobo Village will open in August 2011 near University Arena. The housing on UNM's south campus is apartment style units designed for upperclassmen and graduate students.
