University of New Mexico Provost James Holloway has invited two finalists, Peter Vorobieff and David Weiss, to campus to interview for the position of dean at University College. During their visit, each candidate will hold open forums for students, staff, and faculty.
Each candidate will also hold an open presentation for the campus community, as scheduled below:
Peter Vorobieff
Peter Vorobieff has taught at The University of New Mexico since 1999. Before joining the ranks of academia, he worked in a variety of places – from the Russian Association of Space Explorers to Los Alamos National Laboratory (not to mention odd jobs as a news photographer, newspaper columnist, construction worker, etc.). His primary research interests lie in the areas of fundamental hydrodynamics and renewable energy. He serves as an advisor to several student organizations, including Pi Tau Sigma honors society and Solar Splash solar-electric collegiate boat racing team.

David Weiss
David Weiss is the interim dean of University College and an associate professor in the Department of Communication & Journalism at The University of New Mexico. He holds degrees in Psychology (B.A., Cornell University), Journalism (M.A., University of Oregon), and Communication (Ph.D., University of New Mexico). His prior academic leadership positions at UNM include Chair, associate chair, and co-chair of the C&J Department, and director of the Liberal Arts & Integrative Studies Program in University College. At his prior institution, Montana State University-Billings, Weiss was director of the Media Studies B.A. program and the Public Relations M.A. program, both based in the MSUB’s Department of Communication & Theatre.
