President David J. Schmidly was the recipient of the Chapter Citation Award for his "outstanding contribution to the university and to Mortar Board" during his tenure as president at UNM.
Mortar Board is a national honor society for college students that recognizes qualities of superior scholastic ability, outstanding and continual leadership, and dedicated service to the college or university community. The UNM Maia Chapter was incorporated into the Mortar Board national organization in November 1936. In the 1950s, the Maia Chapter assumed sponsorship of UNM's annual Hanging of the Greens tradition instituted in the 1930s by Lena C. Clauve, UNM's first dean of women. UNM Mortar Board also leads graduation flower sales and staff appreciation receptions on campus.
