"The change in University policy to prohibit use of mopeds/scooters on pedestrian walkways was driven by the UNM Campus Safety Committee. The number of accidents and near-misses over several years prompted the change, coupled with the fact that UNM was one of the only universities still allowing mopeds/scooters to travel on sidewalks, etc. The prohibition banning them from sidewalks necessitated PATS changing its Parking Regulations policy regarding where mopeds/scooters can be parked (can’t get to a bike rack without being on a sidewalks).
"To help students, faculty and staff in this policy (and regulation) change, during the 2017-2018 fall semester customers can obtain their moped/scooter permit at no-charge, otherwise the permit cost is $36 per academic year (pro-rate, like all UNM permits). The permit allows the customer to park in “designated motorcycle parking”. Otherwise, and as with all parking on campus, if the customer chooses not to purchase a permit for their vehicle, they have the option of using pay station parking instead (this is also true with motorcycles)."
