Senate elections for the Associated Students of The University of New Mexico are underway as 20 undergraduate students campaign for a position in the senate.

The senate consists of 21 members, and this ASUNM election season has 10 available seats. Current senators that are running for re-election are Madelyn Lucas and Mohammad Assed

All candidates must be an undergraduate student that is enrolled in at least six credit hours, not under any kind of University probation and have at least a 2.5 GPA.

Like state and national government in the United States, the ASUNM Senate is divided into committees.

While ASUNM’ Elections Commissions does not acknowledge slates, candidates usually run in groups to promote likeminded ideas called slates. Some slates in this election include REDEF1NING UNM, PACC, Unite and Ignite.

Main concerns voiced by the students is safety on campus and the current cultural climate on campus.

The Finance Committee hears matters of money such as budgets and appropriation requests.

The Steering and Rules Committee handles resolutions, which are non-binding documents that express the Senate’s views on various issues around campus and the world. Changes to ASUNM’s constitution and lawbook must also start in the Steering & Rules Committee.

The Outreach and Appointments Committee’s chief responsibility is to interview and recommend appointments to the president of ASUNM’s cabinet and positions in the eight student service agencies.

“This is the chance for the undergraduate student body to voice their opinions by voting for up to ten candidates. Each students vote will decide the future leaders of the university, ultimately creating change on campus,” says Elections Commission Executive Director, Jordan Montoya.

Undergraduate students are able to vote in person at the Student Union Building Mall Level on Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students are also able to vote at MyUNM from Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. till Nov. 14 at 5 p.m.
