The University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management and the Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences Department have partnered to provide a new Master of Business Administration track focused on sport management beginning in January 2023.
The MBA for Professionals program, which also allows early career professionals to pursue tracks in education, health care, film, and digital arts, operations, marketing, finance, and general management, is accepting applications for Spring 2023 with a deadline of Oct. 1, 2022.
Students admitted to the new sport management track will complete the Anderson MBA for Professionals core coursework and 12 credit hours from the Sport Administration Department. Sport management coursework includes options to pursue courses in sport leadership, sport marketing and promotion, financing sport, risk management in sport, legal aspects of sport, and internship experiences with local sports organizations.
Todd Seidler, graduate program coordinator for UNM’s Sport Administration Program, said, “The sport industry is predicted to continue to grow rapidly over the next decade. For those interested in the business of sport, this program will prepare graduates for leadership positions in a wide variety of amateur and professional sport organizations.”
The MBA for Professionals program is a part-time, evening program designed for working professionals with at least one year of work experience. Students can progress through the program at their chosen pace, focusing on one or two courses during each cycle. Coaching from industry professionals is integral to this program. Coaches provide guidance and mentorship, helping students connect the business curriculum with their career goals in each professional track.
“Anderson is providing the business fundamentals and hands-on learning experiences that are essential for emerging leaders in sport management,” said Mitzi Montoya, dean of the Anderson School.
“Sports are a significant part of our economy, both within our region and beyond. This partnership with the UNM Sport Administration Department allows us to develop leaders in sport management to support healthy growth within this industry.”
