The UNM College of Nursing is participating in a new national campaign to recognize the important work of nurse-managed health clinics. National Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Week, Oct. 3-9, will celebrate the 250 nurse-managed clinics that exist across the U.S.
When President Obama signed health care reform into law in March 2010, it signaled the beginning of a new era for nurse-led health care – with the creation of a $50 million grant program to support innovative safety net providers like the UNM College of Nursing.
UNM College of Nursing has several clinics in Albuquerque and throughout New Mexico, and is currently developing more clinics to serve the healthcare needs of New Mexicans.
The College's newest clinic is the East Mountain Family Health Center in Edgewood, N.M. The clinic, located at 1841 Highway 66, Building B, serves individuals and families of all ages, and offers a full range of primary care including prenatal services. The clinic provides services regardless of ability to pay, with a sliding fee scale. Most health insurance programs, including Medicare and Medicaid are accepted. Appointments can be made by calling (505) 286-3800.
Many nurse-managed clinics are affiliated with schools and colleges of nursing and serve as clinical education and practice sites for students and faculty.
In addition, these clinics serve as crucial health care access points in areas where primary care physicians are in short supply, providing primary care, health promotion, and disease prevention services to populations who normally do not have access to primary care.
"Advanced Practice Nurses have made significant contributions to the health of New Mexicans in recent decades," said Dr. Mary Anderson, associate professor and practice chair at the UNM College of Nursing. "The growth of Nurse-Managed Health Centers will provide much needed access to quality health care into the future."
