Changes affect escort services, property crimes

Beginning Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, UNM Police will only be able to offer the escort service between 4 p.m. and 7 a.m.  The escorts will be available for people who need to travel from one campus location to another, such as from an office to a parking lot.

In the past UNM Police have been able to expand the escort service to nearby off campus locations, but Chief Kathy Guimond says that will no longer be possible.  Guimond says her office looked at the records of calls for the escort service and found that most calls for escorts come during the evening hours. She also says that people who experience property crimes that are not in-progress, such as stolen bicycles or backpacks will be asked to come to the police office on campus to file a report.

"In these difficult economic times, we are reallocating our resources in order to fulfill our core mission," she says.  Guimond says the department, like many other groups on campus, is adjusting to handle changing priorities.

UNM Police want to emphasize that the department is staffed with police to respond to all emergency and in-progress crimes throughout all parts of the campus.
