Veterans who wanted to return to school or change their careers know the benefits of reaching out to the New Mexico Veterans Upward Bound (NMVUB) program. Thanks to the article Academic Program in New Mexico Helps Veterans Succeed in Higher Education, which appears in the September 2022 edition of VFW Magazine, many others will now know the benefits as well.

Kelly Fitzpatrick, NMVUB program coordinator for Northern New Mexico and U.S. Army veteran, was “dumbfounded” when VFW Magazine contacted her stating they wanted to profile her journey from the Army to her NMVUB position based at UNM-Taos. Fitzpatrick is glad she agreed.

“I am very impressed by the article and how it highlights the value and impact of the program and some of our NMVUB participants’ success stories,” she said.

NMVUB prepares former military members for success in post-secondary education through instruction, advising, and support services. Nearly 700 veterans have come through the NMVUB program since it was established at UNM-Taos in 2012. Many of the participants have gone on to further their education with great success.

“I’m equally pleased with the inclusion of content regarding some of our partners such as UNM-Taos and S.E.E.4VETS. We couldn’t perform our mission, to improve the academic skills and overall well-being of our New Mexico veterans, without the continual support of our partners,” Fitzpatrick shared. “I’ve learned during my three years as NMVUB program coordinator that New Mexico takes care of its veterans and I’m privileged to be a part of that service.”
