The University of New Mexico’s Women’s Resource Center has extended its deadline to Wednesday, April 15 to apply for the Sabrina Single Mothers Scholarship.

“I think our biggest desire is for those parenting in our community to know that the WRC recognizes the immense stressors suddenly being placed on them and we want to be supportive,” WRC Director Jessica Hidalgo Holland said.

The $500 scholarship helps single parents at UNM with the demanding costs associated with being a student-parent. Since the scholarship’s inception in 2004, the WRC has raised more than $55,000 and awarded 61 scholarships totaling $30,500.

“We do not want this scholarship to create additional worry,” Holland said.

She said many of the scholarship recipients have stayed connected to the center through volunteer opportunities or employment opportunities.

"Thanks to the Sabrina Scholarship, I was able to pay my way to Los Angeles while I continued working on my research through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate foundation," recipient Celina Peña said. “It helped alleviate the stress of paying for my daughter’s daycare and rent. Without the scholarship, I would not have been able to continue my research and complete my fellowship requirements.”

Applications can be submitted online or in person, once the center re-opens.
