Welcome Back Days crowd
Hundreds of students change classes and visit the various booths that comprise UNM's Welcome Back Days held annually the first week of school.

The University of New Mexico Student Activities Center (SAC) and the Associated Students of UNM (ASUNM) welcome students back to campus with its annual “Welcome Back Days,” Aug. 19-26. Events will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UNM Duck Pond. Each day features a variety of activities, free food, information tables and live entertainment. 

Welcome Back Days include events to welcome students back to the new semester and provide information about events and activities on campus. 

Welcome Back Days begin with Friday Night Live on Aug. 19 in the Student Union Building from 8 to 11 p.m. Join over 2,500 students for karaoke, casino games, speed sketch portrait artist, a dance, henna tattoos, laser tag, photo booths, student organization tables, UNM sports teams and free food every half hour. 

On Sunday, Aug. 21, freshmen can stop by the SUB north mall and print a copy of their class schedule and get help finding where their classes are on a personalized campus tour called Class Crawl. Students can follow the signs after Freshman Convocation. This event is sponsored by the Student Activities Center, Dean of Students Office and Residence Life. 

Following Class Crawl, the annual Movie on the Field takes place at 8 to 10:30 p.m. All students are welcome to enjoy “Captain America: Civil War,” on Johnson Field. The event is sponsored by ASUNM SSE & SWFC, UNM Greek Life, Student Activities Center and the VP of Student Affairs. 

Monday, beginning at 10 a.m., students can attend President Frank’s Ice Cream Social and Departmental Information Day. Start the first day of the semester off with free ice cream at noon until it’s gone. There will also be information booths from different UNM schools and departments. Also, there will be live music from DJ Monster.  

Tuesday, is Safety, Health, Wellness and ROTC Day. Enjoy safety demos, recreational activities and healthy living alternatives at information booths. ROTC unites will have military vehicles, displays, an obstacle course, climbing walls and more. Students can also enjoy live music from MountainHead and free watermelon from noon until 1 p.m. 

On Wednesday, UNM Community Day, students can stop by for information from UNM’s Ethnic, Women’s and LGTBQ Centers as well as other culturally based programs and departments. There will be a live performance by Trio Romance from noon to 1 p.m. Also enjoy free green chile stew and Pepsi products. In case students missed the Movie on the Field, they can watch “Captain America: Civil War” for free in the SUB at 4 and 7 p.m. 

Wednesday is also North Campus Welcome Back day. Free watermelon and Pepsi products will be served in the courtyard between the BMSB and Nursing & Pharmacy Building from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 

Student Organization Day is on Thursday. Students can meet and speak with ASUNM Student Government leaders and learn how to get involved with any of the over 400 student organizations on campus. Siren Shipwreck will perform while ASUNM serves free pizza and Pepsi products. “Captain America: Civil War” will be shown for free in the SUB Theater at 3:30 p.m. 

Welcome Back Days conclude Friday, Aug. 26, with the Campus Employment and Community Service Day. Students who are looking for on-campus jobs or interested in helping in the community can stop by this event. University departments will be doing on site hiring or work study and student employment positions. Community organizations will be recruiting volunteers. Alumni will serve free hotdogs and Pepsi products. Enjoy music from Treehouse Basement.
